The name of Hazard Imam Malik (Rahmatullahi Alaih) was Malik bin Anas, and His Kunniyat (Patronymic filial name) was Abu ‘Abdillah.
The name of Hazard Imam Malik (Rahmatullahi Alaih) ,s father was Anas bin Malik bin Abi Aamir. And the mother of Hazrat Imam Malik (Rahmatullahi Alaih) was Hazrat Aaliyah bint Shareek bin ‘Abdur Rahman al-Azdiyah.
According to Hafiz Zhahabi, Sam’aani ibn Farhoon, and others scholars Hazrat Imaam Malik (Rahmatullahi Alaih was born in the year of 93 A.H.
According to Mutarraf bin ‘Abdullah al-Yasaari Hazard Imam Malik (Rahmatullahi Alaih) was tall, well-built, fair complexion, blond-haired, large-eyes and nose, broad forehead with hardly any hair on it. He had a very profuse and thick beard that reached down to his chest. He used to trim his moustache near the corners of his lips and said it was disapproved to fully shave them.
Hazard Imam Malik (Rahmatullahi Alaih) used to wear very elegant graceful and expensive clothing, usually wearing white, and frequently changing them. He would put on Musk and other fragrances on his clothing. He would wear his turban and have part of it come down underneath his chin and the tail of it between his two shoulders. He would also wear a shawl-like garment that would cover the head and shoulders.
Education of Hazard Imam Malik (Rahmatullahi Alaih)
Hazard Imam Malik (Rahmatullahi Alaih)’s Family was in itself a place of knowledge where his childhood was in the beautiful gardens and land of Madinah Munnawarah.
He learnt how to read the Holy Quran and memorized the Holy Qur’an in his youth, from Sayyiduna Abu Radim Nafi Abdur Rahman(Radi Allahu anhu),and also received his (Sanad) certification and permission to teach others from him.
Hazrat Imam Malik (Rahmatullahi alih) memory was also extraordinary. He himself said that anything I would record in my memory would never be forgotten again. It is reported about the Imaam that he had the best memory in all of Hijaz, likewise in the knowledge of Hadith and Fiqh. Hazrat Imaam Shaf’iee (Rahmatullahi Alaih) says about him, “If Imam Malik and Ibn Uyainah where not here, the knowledge of Hijaaz would be gone.” Imaam Zhahabi say, “There remains no scholar in Madinah after the Tabi’een comparable to Imaam Malik’s knowledge, jurisprudence, eminence, and memorization.”
TEACHERS of Hazard Imam Malik (Rahmatullahi Alaih)
Hazrat Imam Malik (Rahmatullahi Alaih ‘s) grandfather and uncle were great scholars of Hadith. Hazrat Imam Malik (Rahmatullahi Alaih) learnt A,hadith from his uncle, Sayyiduna Abu Suhail Nafi (Radi Allahu anhu). Hazrat Imam Malik (Rahmatullahi Alaih) was a very keen and enthusiastic scholar from his childhood days. Apart from them Hazrat Imam Maalik (Rahmatullahi Alaih) had many illustrious teachers. Most of them were great Taabi’i scholars who learnt under the Sahaba. Some of his teachers used to teach in Masjidun Nabawi. He learnt how to read the Holy Quran from Sayyiduna Abu Radim Nafi Abdur Rahman (Radi Allahu anhu).
Hazrat Imam Maalik (Rahmatullahi Alaih) also learnt Hadith under Sayyiduna Nafi, Sayyiduna Jafer Saadiq, Sayyiduna Mohammed bin Yahya Ansaari, Sayyiduna Abu Haashim Salmah, Sayyiduna Yahya bin Saeed and Sayyiduna Hishaam bin Urwah (Radi Allahu anhumul ajma’een).
Even Imam A’zam Abu Hanifa (Rahmatullahi Alaih) , was his teacher, held Hazrat Imam Malik (Rahmatullahi Alaih) in great regard and respect and should sit in his study circle. Hazrat Imam Maalik (Rahmatullahi Alaih)liked his students to read aloud while he listened. He used to sit on a high chair with students all around taking notes.
Allamah Zarqaani and Dulaqi have written that the number of the teachers of Hazrat Imam Maalik (Rahmatullahi Alaih) were over 900.
Hazrat Imaam Nawawi has written in Tahzeebul-Asmaa that the teachers of Hazrat of Imaam Malik’s were 900, 300 were from the Tabi’een and 600 from the Tabi Tabi’een.Hazrat Imam Malik,s greatest of all teachers was Nafi’ the slave of Hazrat Ibn Umar (Radhi Allahu Anhu). Hazrat Imaam Malik learned with him for twelve years and attained the knowledge of Hadith and Diraayah (Fiqh).
AS A MUHADDITH AND A JURIST
Hazrat Imam Malik(Rahmatullahi Alaih) was a great “Muhaddith” (A Scholar of Hadith). He was very careful in selecting Hadith, and after examining the Hadith thoroughly he used to record it in his famous book called “Muwatta”.
It was said to Hazrat Imaam Malik, (Rahmatullahi Alaih) that, “Why don’t you take narrations from ‘Amr bin Dinaar? He replied, “I went to him (‘Amr bin Dinaar and I found him narrating Hadith to others while in a standing position. So I thought to myself that the Hadith of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) is too great and majestic to take them in a standing position.”
As a Jurist, he was not afraid of giving a “Fatawa” (Legal Islamic Ruling) even if it was against the Caliph. He was once flogged for doing so.
His respect of Teaching of Hadith:
After Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (Radi Allahu Anhu) and his servant and pupil, Nafi’ (Rahmatullahi alaih) the great Imam narrated Hadith and taught from the age of 17 to about 79. He gave service to the teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam), giving lessons of Fiqh and issuing Fatawa for 62 years of his life. Before the Imaam would narrate any Hadith he would or dictate Hadith to others he would perform wudhu or take a bath, put on his best and most expensive clothing, groom himself, put on musk or another fragrance, then proceed to the gathering of Hadith with the utmost dignity and respect. In every gathering coal ambers of ‘Uood (a special and beautiful fragrance derived from a unique tree) would be burnt continuously until the lesson was over.
Hazrat Abdullah bin Mubarak (Rahmatullahi alaih) reports that one time Hazrat Imam Malik (Rahmatullahi Alaih) was bitten by a scorpion under his garment over ten times while narrating Hadith. During the narration of the Hadith he did not stop in order to remove it, rather he continued to narrate until the end. I noticed the discoloration of his face when the Hazrat Imam Malik (Rahmatullahi Alaih) was being bitten. Afterwards when all the people had left, I came to the Imaam and asked him what had happened. He replied, “A scorpion was biting me under my garment, I could not have kept my patience because of myself restraint, rather it was out of the respect of the Hadith of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) that I did not remove it.
Love for Madinah
Even when Hazrat Imam Malik (Rahmatullahi alaih) attained old age and became very weak he never rode on an animal in Madinah shareef his entire life. He understood that it was against the respect of Madinah shareef to ride on the very land that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) is buried in. Hazrat Imaam Shaf’iee (Rahmatullahi Alaih) says, “I saw at the door of Hazrat Imaam Malik’s home beautiful horses from Khurasaan and Egyptian Mules. So I said to him they were very nice. He said they are yours as a gift from me. I said that you should keep one for yourself. His reply was that I am embarrassed to do so! How can I ride on them when the body of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) is buried here in Madinah shareef and the land is being rode on with the hooves of horses?
Hazrat Imam Malik (Rahmatullahi Alaih) He never wore shoes whilst in Madinatul Munawwarah. He never sat on a horse or used the toilets in this blessed city. He always went out of the city to relieve himself. He used to kiss the old buildings and the remains of old foundations, saying that Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) may have walked by, touched it or saw it.
Such was his love, affection, adoration and admiration for Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam).
Demise of Hazrat Imam Malik (Rahmatullahi Alaih)
when The great Imam, Hazrat Imam Malik(Rahmatullahi alaih) reached the age of 86, became ill on a Sunday and this illness continued to get worse for three weeks until on the 11th of Rabi-ul-Awwal in the year 179 A.H. thus Imam of his time passed away and was buried in the very famous graveyard of Madinatul- Munawwarah called Jannatul-Baqee.
